That night I called Nala. We usually talked every Sunday, but this was a special occasion.

“Hey, Jules,” she answered brightly.

“Hey! So, I think I’ve met my soul mate.”

Nala laughed. “Is that so? Tell me about her.”

What should have taken me a few seconds took me at least ten minutes. “You still there?” I asked after I had finished explaining everything I knew about Ava from the exact color of her eyes to the way she laughed.

“I think so,” Nala said. “So, is she gay too?”

“Umm…”

“You don’t know?”

“I haven’t exactly gotten to that yet. How am I supposed to ask her without freaking her out?”

“If she is, it won’t freak her out,” Nala stated simply.

“And if she isn’t?”

“Then… she probably isn’t your soul mate.”

“I hate you,” I said.

“Love you too!” Nala said. “I’ve got to go to bed, though. I have a big test tomorrow.”

“Look at you, Ms. Fancy Lawyer Woman.”

Nala laughed. “Bye, Jules. I hope your dream girl is gay!”

“Me too!”

After Nala and I hung up, I logged on to Facebook. I only had a few notifications from friends who had liked my status about my first day as a real teacher. There was also a new friend request. I clicked on it, my heart racing for some reason.

She had changed her profile picture since I had searched her name in Dr. Bradshaw’s office. But it was definitely her.

Ava Arbor has sent you a friend request. Do you accept?

Too bad there wasn’t a HELL YES button.
